Romania is the Country-Coordinator of the Working Group on Environmental Protection (1 January 2019 - 31 December 2019)
The key priorities concerning the BSEC activities in the field of environmental protection are defined by Goal 5 “Environmental Protection and Conservation” of the “BSEC Economic Agenda: towards an Enhanced BSEC Partnership”, adopted in 2012.
The main activities, concerning mainly the promotion of cooperation in the field of environmental protection, are carried out by the BSEC Working Group on Environmental Protection which meets regularly every second year or whenever necessary. The BSEC Ministers in charge of Environment met three times (2006, 2011 and 2012) and adopted important Declarations which serve as guidance for the activities in this domain.
Five projects in the field of environmental protection were financed under the BSEC Project Development Fund.
The Working Group elaborated the “BSEC Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for the Black Sea”, which was adopted by the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs on 15 December 2017.
The Strategy is a timely response to Goal 5 of the “BSEC Economic Agenda”, which is related to developing plans for mitigation and adaptation measures to address the impact of climate change.
The Working Group has been focusing on the implementation of this Strategy and examines currently the idea of hiring a consultant for a period of one or two years, in order to prepare an action plan/report to this effect.
